Southtown First Friday’s in San Antonio

san antonio homes downtownSouthTown is home to a San Antonio Tradition as we celebrate the First Friday of each month.  Located just “south” of the King William District, Southtown is a “self-proclaimed” urban village that was created in 1991 as a part of a Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization project. Every Friday of the month from 6 p.m. until around 11 p.m., the streets of Southtown are filled with a variety of art, crafts, music and culture.

At the Center of the festive, high energy atmosphere, you’ll find The Blue Star Contemporary Art Center with ongoing creative exhibits.  Now in its twenty-fifth year, Blue Star continues to be an incubator for contemporary art in San Antonio, hosting over twenty exhibitions each year within its four on-site galleries.  In addition to being a Gallery, the Center acts as an Educational Arm and even offers after school programs and International Study Internships.  On First Friday, you’ll likely find much of the activity at it’s neighbor, the Blue Star Brewery.  This is a local Brewing Company – so go prepared for great beer, a good wine list and bar food ( read- no margarita’s)!  You will normally find good live bands playing in the Complex for First Friday.

In that same area, there’s The Friendly Spot Ice House, and surprisingly – a German Beer Garden, the Beethoven Maennerchor Halle Und Garten!  Yes, the Germans have found a way to get involved with Fiesta and this is THE place to be!  LOADS of fun!  They have a really great event called Fiesta Gartenfest that runs for three nights during Fiesta in April.   It does get crowded during Fiesta, and New Years and all of the other times that people are downtown – but the lines are not that bad, and the food is really good!

The high energy, festive atmosphere of First Friday has found considerable success with the city’s residents and tourists alike. An innumerable amount of galleries, shops, restaurants, and street vendors lie within the borders of Southtown, just a few blocks of one another… and of course, it’s all very close to River Walk.

Think you’d like to live in King William or Southtown?  At The Real Estate Muse, we’ve got some great ideas about Real Estate in Downtown San Antonio - and remember, there’s also a  Trolly that covers this area – it is the EASIEST way to get around during First Friday’s!
